When to Invest in Gold

Faisal Arshad, October 8, 2026October 8, 2026

Gold has always held a special place in personal savings. It is widely viewed as a safe-haven asset, a protector of wealth, and a reliable shield against currency devaluation and long-term inflation. However, gold prices do not simply move up in a straight line. Like any asset, gold goes through cycles of highs, lows, and long periods of stagnancy.

Whether you are looking to build a long-term safety shield for your family’s savings or wanting to profit from short-term market trends, knowing when to buy gold—and when to hold back—is essential.

Understanding How Gold Works

To make smart decisions, you must first understand a fundamental property of gold: Gold is an unproductive asset.

Unlike rental property (which pays monthly rent), dividend-paying shares, or savings deposits (which yield interest), holding physical gold produces zero ongoing cash flow. You only make money on gold through capital appreciation—when its market price rises over time.

Because gold yields no interest or cash flow, its international price is deeply tied to global interest rates and the strength of the US Dollar.

When global economic events (such as rising crude oil prices due to geopolitical conflicts) cause inflation to surge, central banks respond by raising interest rates. High interest rates create two conditions that push gold prices down:

  1. A Stronger US Dollar: Gold is priced globally in US Dollars. When the Dollar gains strength, gold becomes more expensive for global buyers, reducing overall demand and lowering prices.
  2. Higher Government Bond Yields: Government bonds pay safe, fixed interest returns. When interest rates rise, these bonds pay higher profits. Institutional investors (“smart money”) sell non-yielding gold to lock in those higher, guaranteed returns from government bonds instead.

2. Historical Gold Price Trends: International vs. Pakistan (Past 5 Years)

Domestic gold rates in Pakistan are derived from international spot prices (USD per ounce) converted at the prevailing USD/PKR exchange rate, then calculated per tola (1 tola = 11.6638 grams). Consequently, local rates reflect both global price action and domestic currency fluctuations.

A. 5-Year Pakistani Gold Price History (24K Gold per Tola)

Over the past 5 years, 24K gold in Pakistan has experienced a massive structural shift:

2021 (Rs. 100,000 – 125,000): Stable USD/PKR exchange rate; moderate post-pandemic economic recovery.

2022 (Rs. 130,000 – 180,000): Beginning of currency devaluation and rising inflation in Pakistan.

2023 (Rs. 200,000 – 220,000): Rapid rupee depreciation pushing local gold above Rs. 200,000 despite global rate hikes.

2024 (Rs. 240,000 – 280,000): Continued economic stabilization efforts and steady safe-haven local demand.

2025 (Rs. 350,000 – 380,000): Surge in global spot prices combined with long-term inflation hedging.

2026 (Rs. 436,000 – 500,000+): Global spot gold reaching record highs ($5,608/oz peak in Jan 2026) before stabilizing near Rs. 436,000/tola.

Note that even when international gold is flat or declining, local rupee depreciation can drive domestic rates per tola significantly higher.

1-Year GOLD Summary

Strong Surge (Late 2025 – Jan 2026): Global spot gold climbed to an all-time peak of $5,608 / oz.

Correction (Feb 2026 – Jun 2026): Aggressive global interest rate hikes brought prices down as liquidity moved into government bonds.

Consolidation (Jul 2026 – Present): Gold settled into a range between $4,050 and $4,250 / oz, hovering near $4,150 / oz. Locally, rates peaked above Rs. 500,000 per tola before consolidating near Rs. 436,000 per tola.

When SHOULD You Invest in Gold?

When Interest Rates Are Falling or Low: Lower interest rates reduce yields on bonds. The opportunity cost of holding gold disappears, driving investors back into gold.

During High Inflation & Currency Devaluation: When local currency loses purchasing power, physical gold serves as a durable long-term store of value.

When Should You AVOID Investing in Gold?

During Aggressive Interest Rate Hikes: High interest rates push money into high-yielding government bonds, pulling capital away from non-yielding gold.

When the US Dollar is Gaining Strength: A surging US Dollar Index makes gold more expensive globally, putting downward pressure on prices.

When Economic Data Shows Overheating: Higher-than-expected job growth or strong manufacturing activity (PMI) indicates potential interest rate hikes ahead, creating bearish conditions for gold.

Buying at the Peak Due to Hype (FOMO): Buying right after massive price surges leaves investors vulnerable to sharp pullbacks once profit-taking begins.

Summary Checklist for Gold Investors

For Long-Term Savers: Physical gold is a strategic allocation (5% to 15% of savings) to protect wealth against currency devaluation. Buy gradually during consolidation periods rather than rushing in during price spikes.

For Short-Term Traders: Base trades on facts rather than chatter. Track US employment data, US Dollar strength, and technical trend signals (like the 9/21-day average crossovers) before taking positions.
