What Should Your Investment Portfolio Look Like in 2026?

Tahir Muhammad, April 6, 2026April 7, 2026

There is an old saying  – Don’t Keep All Your Eggs In One Basket. This cannot be truer while making an investment portfolio, which means spreading your money across different assets like mutual funds, gold, property, or stocks to reduce risk and increase returns. Given Pakistan’s current economic environment characterized by extreme uncertainty and soaring inflation, diversification is not just smart—it is necessary.

Economic Context for Investment Portfolio 2026

Before building your investment portfolio for 2026, you must consider the Economic Context (2025–2026). Pakistan’s investment landscape has changed significantly between 2025 and 2026:

Inflation had reduced to around 6–7%, but owing to current war situation and disruptions in energy supply chain, the economy is likely to see adverse effects in upcoming months during 2026. Interest rates had declined to just over 10 percent. Currency was relatively stable and even improved in contrast to USD until March, owing to government policy, but after announcement of a potential hike in policy interest rate and flexibility in exchange rate, things are going to change.

Safe Investment Options in Pakistan for Monthly Investors

Investors are shifting toward high-return assets. In 2025, the top-performing assets were:

Gold: +73% return

Stock Market (KSE-100): +48% return

This clearly shows a shift toward liquid assets and market-linked investments, off from a highly over-priced real estate which had been reigning the investment choices since many years.

Now with that said, here is what to consider while building your investment portfolio for 2026 in Pakistan, which includes a mix of traditional and modern assets:

1. Stocks (30%)

Stocks remain the backbone of long-term wealth creation.

  • Focus on blue-chip companies and dividend-paying stocks
  • Consider sectors like:
    • Technology
    • Energy
    • Banking
  • PSX offers strong opportunities for long-term investors

It is important to refrain from overtrading—focus on long-term growth

2. Gold & Silver (15%)

Gold performed exceptionally well during 2025 and the start of 2026, where it was about to reach Rs600000 per tola. Gold Price Trend (PKR per 10g)

Start 2025 | ███████████ 233,711

Mid 2025 | █████████████████ 300,000+

End 2025 | ███████████████████████████ 405,402

Why Invest in Gold?

Protects against inflation

Benefits from rupee depreciation

Highly liquid (easy to buy/sell)

Risks

No regular income (no dividends)
No security without lockers

Like gold, Silver surprised investors with extremely high returns.

Returns in 2025 was about +130%.

Returns Comparison (2025)

Silver | ██████████████████████████████████████ 130%

Gold | ███████████████████████ 73%

KSE-100 | ████████████████ 48%

Why Invest in Silver?

Higher growth potential than gold

Cheaper entry point

Strong global demand (industrial use)

Risks

Highly volatile

Prices fluctuate more than gold

 Best for aggressive investors

3. Mutual Funds (20%)

Mutual funds pool money from investors and invest in stocks, bonds, or money markets. Average Returns depend on the type of mutual fund.

Money Market Funds: ~9–11%

Income Funds: ~10–12%

Equity Funds: 15%–40%+ (market dependent)

Equity Funds | ███████████████████ 20–40%

Income Funds | ███████████ 10–12%

Money Market | █████████ 9–11%

 Why Invest in Mutual Funds?

Managed by professionals

Low entry amount

Diversification

Features to consider in mutual funds:

Management fees

Market dependency (especially equity funds)

Best for beginners and passive investors

4. REIT (Real Estate Investment Trust) – 20 %

REITs allow you to invest in real estate without buying property. Estimated Returns in Pakistan based REITs are:

Rental Yield: 6%–10%

Capital Gain: 8%–15%

Total Return: ~12%–20%

(Real estate overall gave ~8–18% returns in 2025)

Why Invest in REITs?

Regular rental income

Lower cost than buying property

No maintenance hassle

Risks

Slower growth compared to gold/stocks

Dependent on property market

Best for income-focused investors

Portfolio Strategy (Recommended Mix)

Now with all important investment options for portfolio reviewed, here how a smart Pakistani investor should diversify:

30% Stocks → Long Term Growth

15% Gold and Silver → Safety

20 % Mutual Funds→ Stable growth

20% REIT → Passive income

15% Cash → Emergency

Verdict on Investment Portfolio 2026

We find that Gold and silver may still give extraordinary returns in 2026 provided the war-situation improves. Mutual funds may provide stability and ease. REIT is offering steady income but slower growth, with property market likely to expand after major decline in 2025, so an amount equal to mutual funds i.e. 20 percent may be invested here.  The best strategy is not choosing one—but combining all.
