THE LASTING POWER

Faisal Arshad, September 22, 2026September 22, 2026

The Missing Compass To Will To Power

Modern man has been given a sword but no compass.

We were told power is about intensity. Work harder. Be harder. Dominate. Extract more from yourself, from your team, from the day. It works. For a while.

Then the team scatters. The body breaks. Those who believed in you are tired. And you are left with numbers that look good and a life that feels empty.

This is not a failure of your work ethic. It is a failure of your theory of power.

For two hundred years we have lived under Nietzsche’s shadow. He told us Will to Power is the prime drive. He was right. But he left us with a fatal confusion: he made us think that more power means more happiness, more life, fewer fears and fewer regrets.

It doesn’t. A will to power is just more influence, which can be temporary and lasting, depending on how it expands the power of others.

After you meet a man, does the other person have more willpower – more motivation, more empathy, more material and power potential or less? That is the only question that predicts whether your own power will last.

I call it the G-Index.

G = \Delta WP_{other} that is, change in another’s willpower after contact with you.

If G > 0, you are generative. After you, people want to do hard things. They feel more capable.

If G < 0, you are extractive. After you, people feel drained. They want to move away, complain, or prove themselves to you.

Power itself is neutral. A monk and a tyrant both have influence. What differs is whether they multiply willpower or consume it.

Generative (G) has a simple economic test: it takes little and generates more than it takes. If a person or product takes 1 unit of money, time, attention, or resources and returns 10 units of value, capability, or willpower, it is generative. If it takes 10 and returns 1, it is extractive. Value is not price. Value is increase in capability.

A good book takes $20 and five hours and generates a lifetime of thinking. Generative.

A $10,000 mastermind that takes your money and leaves you with anxiety and a to-do list. Extractive.

Google Search takes seconds and generates hours of capability. Generative.

An addictive app takes hours and generates weeks of wasted capability. Extractive.

A great teacher takes one hour of salary and generates a hundred hours of student initiative over a decade. Generative.

A hustle guru takes one hour and generates a hundred hours of self-doubt. Extractive.

MAKING NON-GENERATIVE WEALTH IS A FORM OF EXTRACTIVE WILLPOWER

The act of making wealth, by itself, is extractive. You pull value from the commons — from attention, time, or the market — into your own account. You take 10 units from the world and you keep 9. Your willpower goes up. The world’s goes down by that extraction. This is not evil. It is the nature of accumulation. Every dollar earned is a unit of stored extractive willpower. Wealth is not generative. Wealth is stored extraction.

Consider the forms:

1. Trading and Pumps: A trader makes $1M on a meme coin. He extracted attention, hope, and savings from thousands of retail buyers. His balance is up. Their willpower to trust and try again is down.

2. Property Capital Gains Without Creation: You buy a plot for 5 million, do nothing for three years, and sell it for 15 million because the city grew around it. You extracted 10 million from young families who must now pay more for shelter. You added no houses, no jobs, no capability. You captured location value created by others.

3. Rent Extraction: A landlord raises rent 40% simply because he can. He extracts shelter-security. He gets cash. His tenants get anxiety and less capacity to start anything new.

4. Addictive Tech Exits: A founder builds a product that addicts children to short videos and sells it for $500M. He extracted 100 million hours of focus. He got wealth. Humanity got less willpower.

5. Compounding Through Money Markets or Stocks Alone: You put $1M in a money market and make 20% doing nothing. Or you day-trade stocks, extracting pennies from other people’s panic. Your money made money, but no new willpower was created. No student learned. No worker became more capable. Capital extracting capital. If your compounding doesn’t fund anything that builds willpower in others, it is extractive compounding.

6. Inheritance Without Competence: You inherit 50 crores. You didn’t extract it yourself, but you now hold stored extractive willpower. If you live off the interest, buy cars, and hire people to serve you, you are continuing the extraction without return.

EARNING WITHOUT TRANSLATION TO GENERATIVE WILLPOWER IS ALSO EXTRACTIVE

Even if you earned your wealth ethically, if you stop at earning and hoard it, you remain extractive. Because you have taken, but you have not returned capability. True power becomes lasting only when extraction is translated into generation.

Translation means: you take 1 and you return 10 in the form of increased willpower for others.

Property — Extractive: You buy 10 apartments, keep them empty for appreciation, or raise rents yearly. You own the city. The city owns less hope.

Property — Generative: You take the same 10 apartments and convert two into subsidized live-work spaces where 20 companies start at cost. You took location value. You returned entrepreneurial willpower.

Stocks and Money Markets — Extractive: You compound $2M to $5M by trading and park it in Treasury bills. Your money sleeps.

Stocks and Money Markets — Generative: You compound $2M to $5M, then allocate $1M to fund 100 students through a coding bootcamp on an income-share model. Your compounding becomes their capability.

Consulting — Extractive: A consultant earns $300k teaching productivity, buys a third apartment, and posts his Rolex. His clients remain burned out and dependent.

Consulting — Generative: The same consultant uses $50k to build a free library of templates that lets 10,000 small business owners hire their first employee without him. He took 1. He returned 100.

Course Selling — Extractive: An influencer earns $2M from a course on “how to get rich.” Students feel hyped for three days, then crash. They cannot act without the next course. G < 0.

Course Selling — Generative: The same influencer uses that $2M to run a free 12-week apprenticeship where 50 students launch real businesses and keep 100% equity.

Exit — Extractive: You sell your company for $50M and buy a yacht and a gated villa.

Exit — Generative: You sell for $5M and fund 20 first-time founders with no equity, with one rule: when you succeed, fund two others. Your $5M becomes 100 companies. That wealth will outlive you.

Inheritance — Extractive: You inherit 50 crores, live off rent, spend on status. Your children get money but no skills. The second generation collapses.

Inheritance — Generative: You take 20 crores from that 50 and build a vocational school that produces 500 electricians, plumbers, and solar installers every year who can earn independently for life. You converted stored extraction into permanent willpower.

The Family Test — Extractive: A father works 80 hours to give his kids money, but never gives them belief, skills, or the experience of solving hard things. They inherit cash and low grit.

The Family Test — Generative: A father earns half as much but spends evenings building things with his kids, letting them fail, letting them lead. He translates his work into their grit. That is generative wealth.

The Rule: Wealth is justified only by what it generates after you.

If you make $1 and you leave the world with $0 of new willpower, you were extractive, no matter how hard you worked.

If you make $1 and you leave the world with $10 of new capability, courage, or independence in others, you were generative.

The scoreboard is not your bank. The scoreboard is Delta WP_{other}.

This is why most rich men feel empty. They won the extractive game but never played the generative game.

Short-term influence needs only drive. Long-term influence needs drive times grit.

I_s = WP1 times WP2, where Influence is I_s ( Lasting Power ). WP1 is thier own Power (extractive) and WP2 is the Willpower in others (generative).

Extractive influence burns through other people’s grit to fuel its own drive. That is why it peaks early. Generative influence builds grit in others. That is why it lasts.

We think generative and extractive are opposites. They are not. Generative is the operating system. Extractive is the overclock mode that overheats. You don’t live in overclock.

Look at nature. Evolution solved this long ago. The strategy that invests more — that builds life from zero, that protects and teaches — becomes the chooser. The strategy that invests less must perform risky displays to be selected. The peacock’s tail, the male’s fight, the founder’s all-nighter — all extractive displays exist to pass a generative filter. Generative commands extractive. Always.

We see it in our own lives and we see it in firms. The extractive firm — hustle, growth-at-all-costs, burn the team — grows fast and dies fast. The generative firm — education, open-source, infrastructure — grows slowly and lasts a hundred years because it follows the take-little, generate-more rule.

So why does the short-term strategy persist if it loses long-term? Because time has a filter. Call it Nature, Evolution, Long-Term Selection. Spinoza called it God. Whatever you call it, its rule is simple: it selects for what expands.

And here is the final proof, bigger than biology. The universe itself is not contracting. It is expanding, and its expansion is accelerating. A contracting universe would be extractive, pulling everything into itself. Our universe is generative. It creates more space, more time, more possibility. Survival is not about holding on. Survival is expansion.

This is why hustle culture collapses. Hustle culture is the Extractive Conqueror as a business model. It is the 4 AM club posts, the “sleep is for losers” reels, the founder bragging he fired someone on day one for not being hardcore, the sales team that celebrates grinding 16-hour days while their marriages quietly fall apart, the startup that brags about its $100M valuation but has 200% annual turnover. It looks powerful because WP1 is high. It feels powerful because adrenaline is high. But it has $G < 0$. After every meeting, every sprint, every motivational speech, people have less willpower, not more. So the culture must constantly import new, naive willpower to replace the burned one — new interns, new hires, new followers. It is a Ponzi scheme of willpower. It cannot survive itself, which is why almost all hustle empires end the same way: a burnout post, a scandal, or a lonely exit.

And this is why the entire modern self-optimization industry — “optimize yourself,” “how to be 10x more productive,” “how to be more attractive, more disciplined, more alpha” — is not essentially generative. It teaches you to extract more efficiently from yourself. More output per hour, more habits per morning, more leverage over others. It increases your WP1 while quietly destroying WP2 in you and in everyone around you. A truly generative strategy never asks, “How can I get more from myself?” It asks, “How can I leave more willpower behind me than I found?” Optimization makes you a better extractor. Generativity makes you a better source. One makes you impressive for a year. The other makes you indispensable for a lifetime.

There are four modes of mankind, regardless of gender. And they are strategies, not identities. Any person can occupy any.

The Generative Builder ( G > 0). After them you want to build. They die late, remembered long.

The Extractive Conqueror ( G < 0). After them you feel small. They peak early, collapse lonely.

The Passive Leaker. They don’t have their own drive for will to power nor do they uplift another person’s willpower. They drain by needing rescue.

The Sleeping Generative. They could build, but they don’t expand. They live with regret.

And let this be clear: following the status quo is not generative. Obedience is not G > 0. Most status quos are large-scale extractive systems that survive by making you feel good for complying while slowly lowering your willpower. The good employee who never questions, the good citizen who repeats slogans, the good person who does what everyone does — they may be agreeable, but they do not increase anyone’s willpower. They decrease it by modeling conformity. True generative people are often heretics at first. Socrates was killed by the status quo. Galileo was jailed by it. The entrepreneur who breaks an industry, the teacher who disobeys a bad curriculum to actually teach — they are disruptive, not obedient, and their disruption leaves people more capable, not less. Generative is measured by the rise in willpower, not by approval of the crowd.

The most dangerous person today is the hybrid: generative motive, extractive method. They say, “I’m doing it for my family, for my company,” but their daily method is shaming, shouting, grinding others down. Motive does not matter. Only delta matters, the positive change in willpowers of those in contact with them. Did their willpower go up or down?

You can measure this. Ask yourself after engaging with someone: Do I want to create or do I want to scroll? Creation means they were generative. Scroll means they were extractive.

If you want a scale for your team, use this G-Scale. After interacting with this leader, from 1 to 5:

  1. Do I take more initiative on hard tasks?
  2. Do I feel more capable of handling difficulty?
  3. Do I need them less for the next step?
  4. Do people stay around them longer than two years?
  5. Do people who leave them become more successful?

Above 20, they are a Builder. Below 15, a Conqueror. You now have what Nietzsche never gave you: a measurable Will to Power.

Nietzsche gave you a sword. It is a beautiful, terrible sword. But you cannot live with only a sword.

You need a compass for when to use the sword and when to build the house.

Lasting power is not about being harder. It is about leaving more willpower behind than you found.
